    DURING THE DOWNHILL EVENT THE AUSTRIANS DEMONSTRATED THEIR COMPLETE MASTERY OF THE SPORT. ONLY THE UNITED STATES VISITOR, BILL KIDD MADE AN IMPRESSION -- HE FINISHED THIRD BEHIND KARL SCHRANZ AND ANOTHER AUSTRIAN, GERHARD NENNING.

    COMPETITORS FROM TWENTY NATIONS TOOK PART. NEW ZEALAND WAS TO HAVE TAKEN PART BUT WITHDREW AT THE LAST MINUTE.
