  • Description

An uneasy calm has settled on the Italian provincial city of Reggio Calabria after a week of continuous violence. The violence resulted in a decision to make the smaller town of Catanzaro the capital of the newly-created Calabria region. The Italian government has now decided to refer to decision on Catanzaro and the rival claims of Reggio Calabria to Parliament.

Barricades were set up in the streets of Reggio Calabria and last night (Monday) the city was shaken by a series of explosions. Today (Tuesday), however, there was no violence, although streets remained sealed off by barricades and banners, posters and effigies attacking the decision of the provincial regional capital remained.

Thousands of police have been drafted into the city, but they have kept of the streets since three of their colleagues were shot two nights ago. The disturbances in Reggio Calabria has caused railway services and ferry links with Sicily to be suspended.
