    ABOUT 1,000 OF THE MARINES ARE TO BE TRANSFERRED TO OKINAWA.

    AT THE QUAYSIDE TO SEE THEM OFF WERE GIRLS OF THE RED CROSS, WHO HANDED OUT REFRESHMENTS.

    AMONG THOSE LEAVING WAS THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE FIRST MARINE DIVISION, MAJOR-GENERAL SIMPSON ORMOND, WHO BADE FAREWELL TO THE COUNTRY IN VIETNAMESE.

    WITH THE COMPLETION OF THE EMBARKATION YESTERDAY (7 OCTOBER), THIS BROUGHT TO MORE THAN 7,600 THE TOTAL NUMBER OF UNITED STATES SOLDIERS WHO HAVE LEFT SOUTH VIETNAM UNDER PRESIDENT NIXON'S CURRENT PROGRAMME TO PULL OUT ANOTHER 35,000 MEN BY 15 DECEMBER.

    THE UNITED STATES IS PLANNING TO PULL OUT 60,000 MEN THIS YEAR --- 25,000 LEFT IN JULY AND AUGUST --- BUT NO DECISIONS ON FURTHER WITHDRAWALS NEXT YEAR HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED.
