Sport - and in the finals of the Tokyo World Super Tennis singles championships, those two old rivals Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors met to compete for the title. In the semi-finals, Borg had an easy straight sets victory over John Sadri. Connors, however, had a more difficult match, needing three sets to beat Vitas Gerulaitis.
SYNOPSIS: Connor's gruelling semi-final had taken its toll. He lost his serve immediately and soon found himself set point down and five games to two behind. Borg took full advantage.
Although many of the rallies were fiercely contested, it was Borg's heavy baseline hitting which kept Connors away from the net and constantly on the defensive. On the rare occasions when Connors did get to the net, though, Borg was quick to spot the opportunity to pass him.
After an hour, Borg was poised for victory. With a five-games-to-two advantage int he second set, he served for the match. Again, it was his penetrating groundstrokes that did the damage, although Connors' weak shot into the net finally clinched the match for Borg and the Japanese title for the second year in succession.
After the presentations, Connors paid tribute to Borg's performance, while the champion himself put his victory down to his tactic of keeping Connors on the baseline and out of the game.
