  • Description

In the Central American country of El Salvador , an estimated forty thousand people recently (27 December) took to the streets to demonstrate against continuing protests and rallies by left-wing supporters. The demonstrators were also protesting against the terrorism that has plagued the country and what they called the growing Communist influence".

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators split up into four separate rallies throughout the capital city of San Salvador. About twelve thousand people took part in the biggest of the demonstrations in Cuscatlan Park. Although the demonstration was planned as a peaceful one, these takin part came armed with sticks and truncheons in case of trouble.

Overhead, airforce planes kept watch for possible counter-demonstrations but there were no major incidents. However, shooting later broke out between rival factions and a United States business corporation's office was bombed. The demonstration was a reaction against recent actions by groups opposed to the ruling military and civilian junta.

The banners carried by the demonstrators condemned terrorism and violence. During the past few months there's been a high level of guerrilla activity in El Salvador, including the kidnapping of the South African ambassador, Mr Archibald Gardner Dunn. The sixty year old ambassador was kidnapped last month (November) and he's still being held. He was seized outside his embassy after the El Salvador government broke relations with South Africa because of its apartheid policies.

Meanwhile, clashes between guerrilla and the government's security forces continued. On December 19 at least twenty-five people died when shooting broke out between security forces and about for hundred people occupying a private ranch to demand higher salaries. Two days later (21 December) for left-wing guerrillas died and for were captured during attacks on two police stations. These efforts and others by guerrillas in El Salvador are among the incidents that the demonstrators opposed during their marchers.
