TOKYO: Miss Satoko Tanaka, 18-year-old Kyushu girl, Sunday shattered her own recognized world record of two minutes 37.1 seconds for the women's 200-meter backstroke, clocking 2:33.3 on the last day of the three-day National Swimming and Diving Championships and Olympic tryouts at the 50-meter Meiji Pool in Tokyo.

Miss Tanaka, a student of Tsukushi Girls' School, also beat by two-tenths of a second the world fastest record of 2:33.5 marked recently by Miss Lynn Burke of the United States in the U.S. Women's National Swimming Championships as well as her own best mark of 2:34.8 set earlier this season.

Tsuyoshi Yamanaka, Japan's Olympic medal hope, who Saturday broke the world 1,500-meter freestyle record with a 17:25.0 timing, disappointed swimming experts and fans by covering the 400 meters in only 4:20.8, as much as 4.2 seconds slower than this recognized world mark of 4:16.6 and 4.9 seconds of Australian Jon Konrads' world best record of 4:15.6 swim.

The Japanese Amateur Swimming Federation after the three-day swimming meet selected 43-member team to represent Japan at the Rome Olympics next month in the swimming, diving and water polo events.

The squad consists of six officials, 21-swimmers (14 men and seven women), five divers (three men and two women) and 11 water polo players.
