  • Description

Thousands of demonstrators marched through the streets of Paris on Wednesday (30 December) in protest against the verdicts of the Leningrad trials. The demonstration was called by French Jewish groups, Socialists and the League of Human Rights.

Eleven people, mostly Jews, were convicted in Leningrad of attempting to hijack a Soviet aircraft to sweden. Two death sentences jail terms totalling 101 years were passed.

The mass demonstration in Paris followed spontaneous protest marches which took place all over France on Tuesday. The demonstrations were not approved of by the French communist party, but the party nevertheless deplored the Leningrad verdict as being out of all proportion with the crime.
