Background: The Israeli cabinet met in Jerusalem today (Tuesday) to discuss the implications of the reported entry of tanks from Syria into Jordan. Reports have indicated the several hundred tanks painted with the emblem of Palestine Liberation Army had thrust into North Jordan from Syria.
The cabinet was expected to discuss the threat to Israel's security posed by the crisis in Jordan. israeli forces were reported to be on the alert today (22 Sept) and the cabinet was reported to be considering conditions which would necessitate defensive military moves. Israel has maintained close contacts with the United States over the confused Jordan situation.
The Prime Minister, Mrs Golda Meir, who returned from the United States on Monday, presided over the cabinet meeting which was attended by top-level Government officials including defence Minister Moshe Dayan.
