Background: Delegates representing the Latin-American nations have been meeting in Caracas, Venezuela to settle the terms of an agreement for the development of the Amazon Basin.

SYNOPSIS: The agreement, which was hammered out at the meeting in the Venezuelan capital, is to be known as the Amazonian Pact. Recently Venezuela's President Perez visited Brazil to discuss the proposals with the Head of State, General Ernesto Geisel. Brazil has already launched a major redevelopment scheme to revitalise the area, and it was their support for the Pact which assured agreement at the Caracas meeting.

It will provide for joint projects to develop the Amazon Region, extend the navigation of the river, establish a scheme to combat disease, and open the area to tourists. The final agreement is to be signed in Brasilia in the first week of July.
