  • Description

An important milestone in Malay educational history: the finest residential school in the country, and the first Malay secondary school of this type. Costing 2 1/2 million dollars in Ipoh's main development area - Tiger Lane - this modern well-equipped school provides places for nearly 500 Malay boys from every State in the Federation. On its opening and naming day, the Prime Minister who was to perform the ceremony, was escorted by the school's first Headmaster, Inche Hamdan bin Sheik Tahir. Declaring the school open, and naming it Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman after the Paramount Ruler, the Prime Minister stressed that the school is part of the Alliance Government's big plan to provide education right up to University level, for kampong children of every State. "This school", he said in Malay, "together with others like it yet to be built, and five Rural Trade Schools already in use, will help Malay boys to build careers for themselves in the commercial and professional worlds. Thus they not only help themselves and their parents, but also their nation and the country."
Inside the Hall, Education Minister, Inche Mohammed Khir Johari, prayed that God would bless this historic gathering and accept their aims to mould an independent Malayan society through the medium of learning and education.

After the school was blessed and prayers offered for its success, the visitors inspected the magnificent buildings and facilities, starting off with this fine dining hall where 500 boys can sit down together in conditions of dignity and grace.

For the time being English is the medium of instruction except, of course, in religious classes and the study of Malay language and literature. Strong emphasis is given to subjects which open the way to higher courses in technical schools and universities. But where's a place - as in all good schools - for the arts. In well-equipped labs. and workrooms there are courses in various sciences, in metalwork and in woodwork ..... New opportunities for Malay kampong boys: the young Tigers of Tiger Lane.
