  • Description

A watered-down, safety-first version of one of the world's most famous and hazardous road races, the 1,000 mile "Mille Miglia", was won on May 28 by the Swedish pair, Gunnar Andersson and Charles Lohmander, the 1958 European rally champions, driving a powerful 12 cylinder Ferrari 3,000 which they bought only three days before the race. The Swedes led throughout the two-day event.

Second place in overall classification was taken by the Italian team of Giulio Cabianca and Carlo Provolo in a Flaminia Zagato 1,500, and third by Alberico Cacciari and Giancarlo Sale in another 12 cylinder Ferrari 3,000.

The race was changed to little more than an auto rally after 1957, when ten spectators and two drivers were killed in a single accident.

Part of the Mille Miglie was run over 25 laps of the Monza auto racing circuit.
