Background: Mr. S. Nijalingappa, President of the Indian National Congress, was taken in procession yesterday (Thursday) to Faridabad on the eve of the 72nd session of the Congress. The Congress is to meet this week-end in the town, 20 miles (32 Kms) from New Delhi. Mrs. Gandhi, Indian Prime Minister, is a member of the Congress Party.
Mr. Nijalingappa was taken in procession to Faridabad from the Delhi-Haryana border. He drove in an open car and was garlanded by his admirers, while bands played in open lorries. At the town of Faridabad, the Congress President was greeted by re-shirted volunteers playing drums.
The Congress session began today (Friday) and will last until Sunday (27 April). Party representatives are taking part. It is considered to be very important by political observers, particularly in the light of recent reverses suffered by the Congress Party in the February Mid-term elections.
The left-wing of the Congress Party has recently called for a central coalition of government of socialist parties to fill a potential gap in the central Parliament. The suggestion comes after a similar suggestion by other Party men to form a coalition with right-wing parties. The suggestions are believed to be helping to sharpen the differences between right-wing and left-wing factions of the Congress.
Mr. Nijalingappa has said that he does not consider the differences within the party to be serious.
