    THE U.S.NAVY BATHYSCAPHE TRIESTE IS MAKING A SERIES OF THE DEEPEST CONTROLLED DIVES EVER ATTEMPTED IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IN AN EFFORT TO LOCATE THE HULL OF THE U.S.NUCLEAR SUBMARINE THRESHER WHICH BANK APRIL 10TH IN 8,400 FEET OF WATER WITH 129 MEN ABOARD.

    THE TRIESTE MADE ITS FIRST DIVE TO THE OCEAN BOTTOM WHERE IT SPENT ABOUT FOUR HOURS ON THE BOTTOM, BUT ITS CREW REPORTED NOTHING SIGNIFICANT WAS SIGHTED.

    ABROAD THE TRIESTE ON ITS FIRST DIVE WERE LIEUTENANT COMMANDER DONALD KEACH AND KENNETH MACKENZIE, A CIVILIAN TECHNICIAN AT THE NAVAL ELECTRONICS LABORATORY AT SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.

    WHILE ON THE BOTTOM THE BATHYSCAPHE WAS IN CONSTANT CONTACTS BY TELEPHONE AND TELEVISION WITH ITS TENDER THE U.S.S.FORT SNELLING, A LANDING SHIP DOCK.
