Background: DUE TO AN ALARMING RATE OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT IS IN THE PROCESS OF INSTITUTING A SYSTEM OF RIGHT-HAND DRIVE. THE PROGRAMME, WHICH WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED IN JUNE OF 1967, WILL TAKE EFFECT ON THE SECOND OF APRIL, 1972. BEFORE THE DECISION WAS MADE TO CONVERT THE HABITS OF AUTOMOBILE DRIVERS, THE FEDERATION WAS PLAGUED WITH UP TO 2,300 FATALITIES. LAGOS STATE TOPPED THE LIST OF STATES WITH THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ROAD MISHAPS. IT REPORTED 3,578 ACCIDENTS WITH 136 DEATHS IN 1969. TO MEET THIS CRISIS, MR ALHAJI BABATUNDE JOSE, CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMISSION ON RIGHT-HAND TRAFFIC, INITIATED A CAMPAIGN OF DRIVER EDUCATION AND THE IMPORTATION OF RIGHT-HAND DRIVE VEHICLES. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE TRAFFIC CHANGE-OVER WILL PROVIDE EASIER ROAD TRANSPORTATION ACROSS NIGERIA'S FRONTIERS.

IN AN INTERVIEW, MR JOSE EXPLAINED WHAT NIGERIA STOOD TO GAIN BY THE CHANGE-OVER.

SYNOPSIS: THE CAMPAIGN TO CONVERT NIGERIA TO A RIGHT-HAND DRIVING NATION IS IN FULL SWING. THE CAMPAIGN WAS LAUNCHED IN 1961 TO COMBAT A HIGH RATE OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. FOR THE PAST YEAR, DRIVERS HAVE BEEN URGED TO DIGEST DETAILS OF THE CHANGE-OVER AND TO IMPROVE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF TRAFFIC RULES AND ROAD BEHAVIOUR. MR BABATUNDE JOSE, CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION ON RIGHT-HAND TRAFFIC HAS INITIATED THE CAMPAIGN. IN AN INTERVIEW, MR JOSE SPOKE OF THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE SWITCH-OVER:
THE CHANGE-OVER WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE SECOND OF APRIL AND GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN LAID DOWN TO INSURE SMOOTH IMPLICATION.
