Background: Ankle-deep oozing mud covered the ground at Cardiff Arms Park as Visnews filmed the Wales v England. Rugby match Jan 17.
Welshman Dewi Bebb carried the honours of the day by scoring the first try for Wales against England at Cardiff for 10 years. He threw the ball in from touch, Rhys Williams jumped to catch it, but it shot clean out of his hands straight back to Bebb. Before Peter Jackson - his opposite number - could move, new boy Bebb was past him. Veering inside the mud-bound English full-back Jim Hetherington he headed for the only try of the game - beautifully converted by full-back Terry Davies. A fluke score maybe, but certainly no injustice to England.
The Welsh team were favourites in the match although, shortly before Bebb's big moment, England almost snatched a try which could have given them the victory they hardly deserved. Bev Risman was stopped inches short of the line by a magnificent Lloyd Williams tackle.
Basic difference between the sides was that Welsh captain Thomas and his men took to the field with a plan while England sloshed into the ooze and driving rain hoping to muddle through somehow.
The final score - Wales 5 England 0.
