  • Description

The Chinese Premier, Chou En-Lai, flew home to Peking April 29 after signing border agreements and a treaty of peace and friendship with Nepalese Premier Koirala April 28.

Ending his three-day stay in Nepal with a press conference in Katmandu April 28, the Chinese Premier said his visit had been satisfactory, and China wanted to sign treaties with all Asian nations. He went on to say that China was not claiming any territory which Nepal considers to be hers, and did not seek exclusive possession of Mount Everest.

A joint statement issued April 28 by Premier Chou En-Lai and Koirala, said the treaty "marked the entrance of Sino-Nepalese relations into a new phase." The treaty states that the two countries "recognise and respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other," and agree to maintain peaceful and friendly relations, and to settle disputes by peaceful negotiations."
The treaty term is for 10 years unless either side gives one year notice of termination, and it continues thereafter subject to the same notice.
