    Background: Nigeria's Head State, General Yakubu Gowon, paid a flying visit to Niger on Tuesday (June 6) fir talks with Niger President Hamani Diori. The meeting of the two heads of state, at which they discussed the African situation generally and bilateral co-operation in particular, took place on the eve of an Organisation of African Unity conference in Morocco. Both nations are members. It also came just after the meeting in Mali to set up the West African Economic Community, of which Niger will be a member. At that meeting, President Diori expressed reserves about the effect of Niger's adherence to the Community code on its bilateral agreement with other countries including Nigeria.

    SYNOPSIS: Nigeria's Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, arrived in Niger on Tuesday for a flying one-day visit for talks with Niger President Hamani Diori.

    Later, the two men went into Niamey, the capital, and held talks about the African situation in general and bilateral co-operation in particular.

    General Gowon's visit - he arrived in the morning and left later the same day -- came on the eve of an Organisation of African Unity conference in Morocco. Both nations are members.

    The occasion also came just after the meeting in Mali to create the West African Economic Community. Niger, which will be a member, expressed reserve at the meeting about the effect of its adherence to the Community's code on its bilateral agreements with other countries including Nigeria -- which is not joining the organisation.
