A new Bishop, Msgr. Mensah, was consecrated in the diocese of Porto Novo in Dahomey?
A new Bishop, Msgr. Mensah, was consecrated in the diocese of Porto Novo in Dahomey this month. The ceremony took place in the Notre Dame cathedral in the city before an audience which included President Maga, the Dahomey Head of State.
The new Bishop arrived in a procession which included many top-ranking West African clergy, including the apostolic delegate from Dakar, Seated in the cathedral were Government Ministers, nuns, priests and the laity of Porto Novo. Also was the mother of the new Bishop.
The consecration ceremony was conducted by Cardinal Zoungrana and the bishop received the blessing of the congregation.
Speaking later to the congregation, the new Bishop reminded them of the authority of God vested in the Pope. He referred to the many nuns and priests present and said that for them the hour was full of responsibility.
After the consecration ceremony in the cathedral, Mgr. Mensah conducted a holy mass at the Church of St Joseph in the city. The colourful and devout ceremony marked the climax of a day of intense religious significance for the people of the Porto Novo diocese, and Dahomey.
