The Greek millionaire shipowner, Mr. Aristotle Onassis, who is trying to take over the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland, today (Monday, 14 December) met leaders of the yards seven unions. a union spokesman, Mr. Daniel McGarvey, said afterwards that any fears that Mr. Onassis was "anti-union" were unfounded.
Mr. Onassis is one of several contenders for the shipyard and already owns 25 per cent of it. For his talks with union leaders he put them up at his favourite London Hotel, Claridges. They were clearly impressed by his attitude but will see the other contenders before expressing a final opinion.
The Harland and Wolff shipyard at Belfast is Northern Ireland's biggest employer with 12,000 workers. It is facing a GPB3,000,000 Sterling deficit but has advance orders worth GPB70,000,000.
