  • Description

More than 6,000 demonstrators, protesting against the Chilean junta and Chile's participation in the World Football Cup, marched through the city centre of West Berlin on Saturday shouting "Death to fascism -- freedom for Chile."
The demonstration came three days after a bomb shattered the Chilean Consulate in West Berlin, injuring three people, but there were no incidents.

Speakers at a final rally in front of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, said the Chilean military junta wanted to enhance its prestige through soccer and thereby "deflect attention from their crimes." Police and riot units stood by with water cannons.

The previous day, protestors staged a demonstration against the Chilean team just before the South Americans began their World Cup match against West Germany. The protestors gathered at one end of the Olympic stadium in West Berlin chanting slogans, whistling and jeering at the Chilean team.

Meanwhile, during Saturday's demonstration, the Chilean team remained inside their heavily guarded camp behind a police cordon and barbed wire. Although they did not have a game that day, the team had an early morning practice run.
