Rally driving...and in France there was a Boxing Day (26 December) start for the first ally between Paris and Dakar, capital of the West African state of Senegal.
SYNOPSIS: Competitors gathered in the Trocadero gardens before they started off across ten thousand kilometres (6213 miles) of the roughest terrain in North and West Africa.
One hundred and ninety teams have entered in vehicles ranging from apparently standard production models to especially adapted examples like this Toyota Land-Cruiser. Its four-wheel drive transmission was expected to be an asset on undeveloped roads in Africa.
A variety of competitors from around the world are taking part, and nearly half of them are riding motorcycles. The route takes then through Marseilles to Algeria, Niger, Mali and Senegal, with four thousand kilometres (2485 miles) of special stages.
The organisers have avoided holding night-time stages to reduce the possibility of serious accidents. And five doctors in trucks are closely following the competitors. Yamaha and Honda motorcycles are favourites to win the rally which is expected to end on January the 14th. (1979).
