    GENERAL LYMAN LEMNITZER TODAY (TUESDAY) HANDED OVER THE SUPREME COMMAND OF ALLIED LAND FORCES IN EUROPE TO GENERAL ANDREW GOODPASTER. THE HANDOVER MARKED THE END OF GENERAL LEMNITZER'S FIFTY-ONE YEARS OF ARMY SERVICE.

    GENERAL LEMNITZER IS THE FIFTH SUPREME COMMANDER SINCE THE COMMAND WAS ESTABLISHED IN DECEMBER 1950. THE FIRST SUPREME COMMANDER WAS THE LATE GENERAL EISENHOWER. HIS WIDOW, MRS. MANIE EISENHOWER, WAS A GUEST AT TODAY'S CEREMONY.

    ALL THE NATO COMMANDERS HAVE BEEN GENERALS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.

    GENERAL LEMNITZER WAS AN ARTILLERYMAN, AND COMMANDED AN ARTILLERY REGIMENT DURING THE SICILIAN AND ITALIAN CAMPAIGNS IN WORLD WAR II. GENERAL GOODPASTER IS A MILITARY ENGINEER, AND ALSO FOUGHT IN THE ITALIAN THEATRE OF WAR DURING 1943.

    TROOPS OF THE FOURTEEN NATO NATIONS TOOK PART IN TODAY'S CEREMONY, AND THERE WAS FLYPAST BY THE AIRCRAFT OF SIX NATIONS, TRANSPORTS AND FIGHTERS.
