Election fever is gripping India. The general election, called a year before it was due, begins on March the 1st. Voting will be spread over several days, ending on March the 10th.
The future of India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Gandhi, depends on the outcome of the election. The early election came about because of her weak majority in Parliament. The latest crisis arose over the discontinuation of privy purses to hereditary princes which was demanded by Mrs. Gandhi. The princes appealed against Mrs. Gandhi's decision and the Indian Supreme Court upheld their appeal.
Mrs. Gandhi is asking the country for a clear mandate to accelerate the nationalisation of India's resources and to eliminate the inequity of extreme wealth and poverty in the country.
She has been campaigning hard, flying from city to city and addressing up to 15 meetings a day.
