  • Description

About 1,000 anti-reformist Roman Catholics from several European countries marched through Rome on Saturday (27 June) to protest against Pope Paul's changes in the Mass. The demonstrators began their procession from st. Maria Maggiore Church, about an hour's walk from St. Peter's Square.

Singing Latin prayers and fingering rosaries, the marchers went through he streets followed at a discreet distance by six lorry loads of police. But the procession took place in perfect order.

The March was due to culminate with a service in St. Peter's Church and, an all-night vigil in Saint Peter's Square below the Pope's private Vatican apartment.

The majority of the demonstrators, led by a small group of anti-reformist priests, were from France and West Germany. There were also smaller groups from Austria and Switzerland.
