  • Description

THE CONTROVERSIAL "DAGGER IN THE HEART" MONUMENT WAS UNVEILED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN PRIME MINISTER, DR VERWOERD ON OCT 10 (KRUGER DAY), AT VEREENIGING, TRANSVAAL, THE MONUMENT, SYMBOLISING THE RISE OF THE NEW SOUTH AFRICAN NATION AFTER THE TREATY OF VEREENIGING AT THE END OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR, DEPICTS A FALLEN MAN WITH A DAGGER IN HIS HEART AND A NEW POWERFUL "SPIRIT OF STEEL" RISING ABOVE IT WITH A GLEANING SWORD IN ITS HAND.

DR VERWOERD, SPEAKING AT THE UNVEILING CEREMONY, SAID SOME PEOPLE THOUGHT THE MONUMENT WAS INTENDED TO REPRESENT THE TRIUMPH OF THE AFRIKANER OVER THE "ENGLISHMAN" BUT THIS WAS NOT THE INTENTION. IT SYMBOLISED THE POWER THAT REMAINED IN MAN, EVEN AFTER THE GREATEST DEFEAT.

WORK OF THE SCULPTOR COERT STEYNBERG, THE DESIGN HAS GIVEN RISE TO PROTEST AND CONTROL EASY BECAUSE ITS SYMBOLISM IS SAID TO HAVE HURT THE FEELINGS OF MANY ENGLISH - SPEAKING SOUTH AFRICANS.

TWICE LIFE SIZE, THE MONUMENT WAS TO HAVE BEEN UNVEILED ON MAY 31, AS PART OF THE REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS. THE CEREMONY WAS DELAYED BECAUSE THE PUBLIC HAD NOT SUBSCRIBED ENOUGH TO PAY FOR IT.
