  • Description

Calvin Craig, leader of the Ku Klux Klan in the state of Georgia (Southern USA), announced Sunday (April 28) that he had resigned from the white supremecist organization to help unite whites and Negroes.

The 39-year-old Grand Dragon (chief officer) said he was resigning to help build a nation where "black men and white men can stand shoulder to shoulder in a united America." "The only solution to the problems of the country today," said Craig,".... is for all good men to sit at the conference table and let's talk the problems out."
He said he planned to devote his energies to registering Negro voters in Atlanta.

Speaking of his role as Grand Dragon, Craig said that during his eight years as head of the state chapter he had "ordered the Klan into action not to create trouble, but to help keep the peace." He blamed civil rights groups for disturbances caused during demonstrations in recent years.

in his news conference, Craig said that his decision to leave the Klan represented "no change in attitudes but would allow him time to "accomplish more of my beliefs."
