    A PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS BOEING 707 JETLINER CRASHED ON TAKE-OFF FROM SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, ON MONDAY, INJURING TWO OF ITS 125 PASSENGERS. NONE OF THE CREW OF 11 WAS HURT.

    A SPOKESMAN FOR THE AIRLINE SAID THAT THE AIRCRAFT, BOUND FOR NEW YORK, RAN INTO A FLOCK OF BIRDS, CAUSING LOSS OF POWER IN TWO ENGINES. THE PILOT DECIDED TO ABORT THE TAKE-OFF AND PUT THE ENGINES INTO REVERSE.

    THE AIRCRAFT OVERSHOT THE RUNWAY BY ABOUT 200 FEET (70 METRES) AND PLOUGHED INTO AN AREA OF GRAVEL AND MUD, RIPPING AWAY ITS UNDERCARRIAGE, BEFORE COMING TO REST ON ITS NOSE.
