Background: The first full day of the royal tour. The Queen and Prince Philip arrive at Torbay Airport, in St. John's, Newfoundland -- the first leg in a five hundred mile journey by road and air in the island province. They will log fifteen-thousand miles before the tour ends. This was the scene at the airport: a guard of honour from the Royal Canadian Navy, and the ever-present escort of Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The royal couple flew to Gander where the Queen opened the new air terminal. Deer Lake, in the western section of Newfoundland, was next on the itinerary -- then by road to Corner brook, a pulp and paper centre. On the ramp -- an old friend. The RCAF's special VIP plane, the C-5. The aircraft flew the royal couple across Canada on two previous tours. Prince Philip also used the plane during his visit to Canada's Arctic.
