  • Description

LEADING MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH LABOUR PARTY WERE AMONG THE 200 MOURNERS AT THE LONDON FUNERAL TODAY OF MR.MORGAN PHILLIPS, FORMER GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE PARTY.

MR.PHILLIPS, ONCE A MEMBER OF THE SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT, DIED A WEEK AGO AGED 60, THREE DAYS BEFORE THE DEATH OF THE PARTY LEADER, MR.HUGH GAITSKELL.

AMONG THE MOURNERS AT THE FUNERAL WERE MR.GEORGE BROWN, DEPUTY LEADER OF THE LABOUR PARTY, AND ANOTHER STRONG CONTENDER FOR THE NOW-VACANT LEADERSHIP, MR.HAROLD WILSON.THESE TWO MEN FOUGHT EACH OTHER IN LAST AUTUMN'S BALLOT FOR THE DEPUTY LEADERSHIP.WHEN MR.BROWN WON BY 133 VOTES TO 103.

IT IS FELT THAT MR.WILSON'S DEFEAT IN THE CONTEST FOR THE DEPUTY LEADERSHIP DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE WOULD NECESSARILY BE DEFEATED IN AN ELECTION FOR THE LEADERSHIP ITSELF.THE LABOUR PARTY IS NOW LOOKING FOR AN ACCEPTABLE, EXPERIENCED PUBLIC FIGURE WITH A NATIONAL REPUTATION.MR.BROWN'S VICTORY LAST YEAR DOES NOT MEAN THAT IN THE EYES OF THE PARLIAMENTARY LABOUR PARTY HE FULFILS AUTOMATICALLY THESE CONDITIONS WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL FOR A LEADER, BUT NOT HIS DEPUTY.

ANOTHER MOURNER WAS MR.JAMES CALLAGHAN, THE 'SHADOW CHANCELLOR'.HIS NAME HAS BEEN SUGGESTED AS A COMPROMISE BETWEEN MR.BROWN AND MR.WILSON.

AFTER REVIEWING THE PRESENT POLITICAL SITUATION, THE 'SHADOW CABINET' IS BELIEVED TO APPROVE THE IDEA OF AN EARLY DECISION ON THE PARTY'S NEW LEADER.BECAUSE OF THIS, SPECULATION ABOUT OTHER POSSIBLE NOMINEES, INCLUDING MR.PATRICK GORDON-WALKER, SIR FRANK SOSKICE, AND MR.ANTHONY GREENWOOD IS SAID TO BE FADING.
