SHARAF:"The integrity of this area, particularly of its very heart, Jerusalem, must be protected from mutilation. The uprising by the people who are protesting the occupation of their homeland must be understood and properly assisted by the Council. The message it sends to the international community must be absorbed. This is the role of the Security Council".

MOWAFFAK ALLAF: "In spite of the strong censure that the vetoed resolution has represented in relation to Israel's oppressive practices in the occupied Arab territories, the zionist regime ignored completely the serious warnings by the 14 other members of the Security Council. It persisted in its savage oppression of the Arab population. Scores of innocent and unarmed demonstrators were killed, wounded or savagely beaten, curfews imposed on Arab villages and cities and the inhabitants subjected to worse inhuman treatment".

ZEHDI TERZI SPEAKS: "Relations between the racist regime of South Africa and the Zionist movement are nothing new. Was not the establishment of a Zionist state described as a victory of the whites over the Arabs? The friendship between Smuts and Weitzman-? So we have to recall the common purpose between Herzog and Cecil Rhodes? What is really significant, Mr. President, is the role of the government of the United States of America. While it calls for the eradication of the deplorable racist system in South Africa, it is financing an army and otherwise buttressing the other tip of the axis".

Background: The United Nations Security Council met on Wednesday (5 May) to hear Arab charges against Israel stemming from the current unrest on the occupied West Bank of Jordan.

It's the second time in six weeks the matter has been discussed in the U.N. The meeting was requested by Egypt, after it claimed that Israel had been responsible for killings, beatings, and tortures on the West Bank.

Since the last U.N. Middle East debate in march there have been several clashes between arab protestors and Israeli troops. An Arab demonstrator was killed in the West Bank town of Nablus last week.

At least 30 people were injured in the heart of Jewish Jerusalem on Monday (3 May) when a booby trapped motor-cycle exploded.

Speakers in the U.N. debate included Jordan's Sherif Sharaf, Syria's Mowaffak Allaf and Palestine Liberation Organisation's delegate Zehdi Terzi. Transcript of parts of their speeches follow.
