  • Description

Greece will have its first election in a decade on Sunday (17 November) to elect a Parliament which will restore democratic rule, abolished when the Army seized power in April, 1967.

The voting will take place in about 12,500 polling stations throughout the country during the day. The first definite trend of the election will not be known before midnight.

About six million Greeks will choose their new leaders from a list of 1,426 candidates belonging mostly to five main political parties.

Premier Constantine Karamanlis party -- the New Democracy Party -- is predicted to win an overall majority in the 300-member house and to lead the cabinet.

The Centre Union-New Forces Party is expected to be a tough contender along with the United left.

The new Parliament is due to convene on 9 December -- one day after a referendum on the future of the monarchy, abolished by the military in June 1973.
