  • Description

Professor George Papandreou leader of the Greek Socialist Opposition party-- the Panhellenic Socialist Movement -- opened his election campaign in Athens on Wednesday.

Professor Papandreou -- the son of a former Greek Prime Minister -- formed the Socialist party last month when the returned to Greece after seven years in exile.

He has citicised the Government of Prime Minister Karamanlis for calling the General Election on 17 November. The Professor says this has given the established parties an unfair advantage because they do not have to build up their support from scratch as do the left-wing groups.

However the Panhellenic Socialist Movement and the Greek Communist Party have both agreed to issue statements calling on their supporters not to incite tension during the elections. This was suggested after a meeting between representatives of the three main parties and Mr. Angelos Vlachos, the Minister to the Prime Minister.

The November elections will be the first in Greece for a decade.
