    MEMBERS OF THE SWEDISH ACADEMY - THE BODY THAT SELECTS THE WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE - MET IN STOCKHOLM OCT 26 FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 1961 WINNER. THE SECRETARY OF THE ACADEMY, DR. ANDERS OSTERLING, READ OUT THE NAME OF THE RECIPIENT: MR. IVO ANDRIC, THE MOST PROMINENT CONTEMPORARY YUGOSLAV AUTHOR.

    ANDRIE IS AGED 69 YEARS, AND THE FIRST YUGOSLAV TO RECEIVE THE PRIZE. DR. OSTERLING SAID THE REASON FOR GIVING THE AWARD TO ANDRIE WAS THE "EPIC FORCE WITH WHICH HE HAS DEPICTED SCENES OF HUMAN DESTINY DRAWN FROM THE HISTORY OF HIS COUNTRY". HIS WORKS INCLUDE "THE BRIDGE ON THE DRINA" AND "BOSNIAN STORY".

    HE SPENT SEVERAL YEARS IN THE YUGOSLAV DIPLOMATIC SERVICE, AND WAS AMBASSADOR IN BERLIN WHEN WORLD WAS TWO BROKE OUT. HE SAID HE HOPED TO GO TO SWEDEN TO RECEIVE THE AWARD.

    THE PRIZE MONEY THIS YEAR IS 250,233 SWEDISH KRONER.
