  • Description

President Jomo Kenyatta of kenya and visiting President Idi Amin of Uganda had talks in Nairobi on Friday.

Local reports suggested the two Presidents might be discussing the current dispute between Uganda and Tanzania. President Amin is known to want improved relations with Tanzania, whose President Julius Nyerere opposed the coup by which General Amin ousted ex-President Milton Obote.

Official sources said the two Presidents discussed matters of mutual interest and the East African Community, which groups kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in a Common Market.

SYNOPSIS: At the State House in Nairobi, on Friday Kenya's President Jomo kenyatta was host at a session of talks with visiting Ugandan President Idi Amin, who had flown in the same day. General Amin before the talks asked the press that their subject be kept confidential, but reports suggest that they would concern the current disputes between Tanzania and Uganda. In several recent statements General Amin has emphasised his desire for improved relations with Tanzania, whose President Julius Nyerere opposed the coup by which General Amin deposed ex-President Milton Obote in Uganda.

After his talks with President Kenyatta, President Amin visited the Jamia Mosque in the centre of the city. When the Moslem Ugandan leader left after prayer he was surrounded by hundreds of people anxious to shake hands with him.

Later at Nairobi airport President Amin enjoyed an equally warm send-off. The unexpected visit to kenya followed an invitation brought to Uganda by Kenyan Vice-President Daniel Arap Moi, who was at the airport to see the General off. Official sources said the two Presidents' discussions covered matters of mutual interest and the East African Community, which groups kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in a Common Market.
