Background: The Turkish Government has refused to bargain for the life of Israeli Consul General. Ephraim Elrom, despite a threat by his kidnappers to put him before a firing squad unless a number of jailed leftwing extremists are freed.
The deadline set by the kidnappers was 1500 GMT on Thursday, May 20. The Consul General was captured as he returned to his home at lunchtime yesterday (Monday).
In a broadcast to the nation, Turkey's Deputy Premier, Sadi Kocas, presented the kidnappers with a counter-ultimatum. He threatened all members of the underground Liberation Army, who claim responsibility for the kidnapping, with the death penalty unless Mr Elrom was freed immediately.
