    GUNS WERE FIRED AND STONES THROWN DURING A RIOT IN KAMPALA, THE UGANDA CAPITAL, ON FRIDAY. THREE PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 20 INJURED. THE DISTURBANCES FOLLOWED THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULT OF A REFERENDUM.

    UNREST FLARED WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT TWO COUNTIES IN BUGANDA, A KINGDOM WITHIN UGANDA, HAD VOTED OVERWHELMINGLY TO REJOIN THE NEIGHBOURING KINGDOM OF BUNYORO, FROM WHICH THEY WERE ANNEXED BY THE BRITISH 70 YEARS AGO.

    (BUGANDA REFUSED TO RECOGNISE THE REFERENDUM. NOW, ACCORDING TO REPORTS TODAY (SUNDAY)' ITS GOVERNMENT HAS RESIGNED.

    POLICE MOVED IN QUICKLY ON FRIDAY TO QUELL THE UNREST. MORE THAN 80 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED. ALL TOLD, 79 INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE WERE REPORTED IN AND AROUND KAMPALA.

    THE UGANDAN GOVERNMENT SAYS THINGS ARE NOW BACK TO NORMAL, ALTHOUGH SPECIAL ARMY AND POLICE UNITS HAD BEE ALERTED IN CASE OF FURTHER TROUBLE.
