Background: In Sharp contrast to the violence seen in Poland's coastal towns during the past week the capital, Warsaw, has remained undisturbed so far, and is busily preparing for the Christmas festivities.
All the traditional Christmas merchandise is finding a ready market. Although many commodities have recently risen dramatically in rice...thus sparking off the rioting in other centres...the inhabitants of Warsaw are still intent on making their purchases.
Food princes have should the most marked increases, but the selection offered to the public appears to have changed little. Vegetables and poultry brought to the city from the surrounding rural areas have come in for the usual astute scrutiny of the buyers and have been selling well.
Undeterred by told headlines and terse newspaper reports of the crisis in such places as Gdansk and Szczocin, shoppers and workers are moving about the city in the usual pro-Christmas crowds. Not just essential commodities are being offered them, but the luxuries as well...choice winos, rare tinned foods, exclusive model shoes, and the latest design television sets.
With typical determination the people of Warsaw have resisted all influences which appeared to threaten their festive season, but still remain concerned at the unrest in other centres.
