  • Description

THERE IS STILL UNCERTAINTY IN NIGERIA OVER THE OUTCOME OF THE CONTROVERSIAL GENERAL ELECTION. YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) WAS A PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO CELEBRATED THE NEW YEAR, AND CONDITIONS WERE QUIET IN LAGOS, THE FEDERAL CAPITAL.

ELECTION RESULTS SO FAR SHOW THAT THE RULING NIGERIAN NATIONAL ALLIANCE HAVE WON A MAJORITY 173 SEATS IN THE 312-SEAT PARLIAMENT. THE RIVAL PROGRESSIVE GRAND ALLIANCE HAS 32.

HOWEVER, PRESIDENT AZIKIWE HAS NOT YET CALLED ON THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE TO FORM A NEW GOVERNMENT. HE IS REPORTED TO BE UNCONVINCED OF THE VALIDITY OF THE ELECTION.

THE PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE SAYS IT WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY GOVERNMENT BASED ON THE RESULT OF THE ELECTION. ALLEGING IRREGULARITIES, THEY HAD EARLIER ASKED SUPPORTERS TO BOYCOTT THE ELECTION.

PRESIDENT AZIKIWE WAS TO HAVE BROADCAST TO THE NATION LAST NIGHT (MONDAY), BUT CANCELLED IT AT THE LAST MINUTE.
