Background: Durham Cathedral re-opened to the public today. The Bishop Dr. Morris Harland held a ceremony of re-conciliation dating back to the middle ages to cleanse the cathedral of Tuesdays tragedy when a man cut his throat at the high altar. Accompanied by members of his chapter the Bishop entered his cathedral soon after 8 o'clock and the ancient ceremony was performed. On its completion a priest took down the notice of closure, and later as the cathedral bells rang out the gates were re-opened to the public. During the service a deed of re-conciliation was signed by the Bishop. It was a ceremony unique in Durham Cathedral's 900 years of history.
