  • Description

TWO WEST AFRICAN STATES, DAHOMEY AND NIGER, ARE DISPUTING THE POSSESSION OF A SMALL ISLAND LAYING IN THE CENTRE OF THE RIVER WHICH FORMS THEIR COMMON FRONTIER.AS A RESULT OF THIS QUARREL, THE TWO STATES HAVE CLOSED THE BORDER, AND DAHOMEY CITIZENS RESIDENT IN NIGER WERE ORDERED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY BY TODAY (TUESDAY).

EACH DAY MORE THAN 16,000 DAHOMEY NATIONALS HAVE BEEN RETURNING HOME, AMONG THEM TECHNICIANS AND MEN HOLDING HIGH ADMINISTRATING POSITIONS IN NIGER.SOME OF THEM WERE GREETED AT MALANVILLE BY THE DEPUTY MINISTER FOR SOCIAL AFFAIRS, M.CONGAKOU.

RELATIONS BETWEEN NIGER AND DAHOMEY HAVE BEEN DETERIORATING DURING THE PAST FEW MONTHS, AND THE IMMEDIATE CAUSE OF RUPTURE IS LETE ISLAND.THIS TINY STRIP OF LAND IS COMPLETELY INUNDATED DURING THE RAINY SEASON, AND ONLY WHEN THE FLOODS SUBSIDE CAN A FEW MEAGRE CROPS BE CULTIVATED.MOST OF THE TIME IT IS UNINHABITED; NEVERTHELESS, SINCE FRENCH MAPS DO NOT SHOW THE ISLAND BELONGING TO ONE COUNTRY OR ANOTHER, BOTH ARE LAYING CLAIM.
