  • Description

    A Buddhist monk burned
himself to death outside a Roman Catholic Church in Saigon Sunday (27 October)
to protest the anti-Buddhist policies of President Ngo Dinh Diem's government.

It was the seventh such suicide in South Viet Nam since the dispute between the
Buddhists and the government began last summer. The monk who killed himself
Sunday...42-year-old Ho Dinh Van...poured gasoline on his robes and set them on
    fire with a match.

Several hundred persons watched Van's flaming death, including many Buddhists
who knelt and touched their foreheads to the pavement in prayer. Van chose the
street in front of Saigon's Roman Catholic Cathedral...where President Diem
    worships...as his place to die.

Buddhist sources say Van wrote notes to President Diem and U.N.

Secretary-General U Thant before his death protesting the suppression of
    Buddhism in South Viet Nam.
