Motorcycling ... and at Mivelles on Sunday (august 27) Johnny Cecotto of Venezuela won the Belgian 750 cc Motorcycle grand Prix and confirmed his led in the World Championship Table. He was victorious in both legs of the event.
SYNOPSIS: Number two, Kenny Roberts of the United States was a favourite for the event, but never challenged cecotto, riding bike number four.
The Venezuelan went firmly into the lead early in the first leg while unfortunate American competitors Roberts and Steve Baker Dropped out only a few hundred yards (metres) from the start - both with engine trouble. Instead of the Americans, it was Frenchman Herve Moineau who strongly challenged Cecotto throughout.
Cecotto powered his the thirty-lap first leg in 43 minutes, 15.2 seconds - comfortably ahead of Moineau whose time was 43 minutes, 34.7.
The second leg - again of 30 laps - saw a still faster performance by the Venezuelan. All competitors in the event were riding Yamaha bikes, but Cecotto kept so clearly in the lead, he made it seem his vehicle was a race apart.
The only competitor to press Cecotto at all was again Frenchman Moineau. Italian Gianfranco Bonnera was more than two seconds behind while the rest of the field was considerably further back.
Cecotto took the flag with a time of 43 minutes, nine seconds, giving him top placing at 81 points in the world championship table.
