  • Description

AT CENTRAL POLICE STATION IN SYDNEY ON FRIDAY (OCT 22) POLICE HAVE CHARGED 51 PEOPLE WHO TOOK PART IN A DEMONSTRATION IN THE CITY THAT EVENING. THE DEMONSTRATION, AGAINST OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE IN THE VIETNAM WAR, STARTED JUST AFTER FIVE O'CLOCK.

FOR NUISANCE VALUE IT WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DEMONSTRATIONS IN AUSTRALIA FOR YEARS. PEAK HOUR TRAFFIC THROUGH PART OF THE MID-CITY AREA WAS BLOCKED FOR ALMOST AN HOUR. BUSES PACKED WITH HOMEWARD BOUND PASSENGERS AND HUNDREDS OF CARS WERE UNABLE TO MOVE AND EVEN PEDESTRIANS HAD TROUBLE IN GETTING THROUGH THE RUSH.

A COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION CAUSED FURTHER CONFUSION. ON ONE SIDE OF THE STREET, 400 PEOPLE CARRYING PLACARDS WITH ANTI-VIETNAM SLOGANS MARCHED, CHANTING, ALONG THE FOOTPATH. ON THE OTHER SIDE WERE PEOPLE CARRYING AUSTRALIAN FLAGS AND SINGING "ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR".

THE COUNTER-DEMONSTRATORS JEERED AT THE OTHER GROUP AND ONE MAN KEPT SHOUTING: "IGNORE THIS COMMUNIST DEMONSTRATION. SUPPORT OUR FLAG." WITHIN AN HOUR, POLICE HAD THE SITUATION UNDER CONTROL, BUT THE ARGUMENTS STILL WENT ON AND AT TIME TEMPERS BECAME HEATED. 400 DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED ALONG THE FOOTPATH, THEY THEN SPILLED ON TO THE ROADWAY, SQUATTED DOWN ON THE PAVEMENT AND REFUSED TO BUDGE.

POLICE ON POINT DUTY SUMMONED REINFORCEMENTS AND SOON DOZENS OF POLICEMEN WERE BUNDLING DEMONSTRATORS INTO WAGONS. MANY HAD TO BE LIFTED BODILY. PAMPHLETS HANDED OUT BY THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE SIGNED: "AUTHORISED BY THE VIETNAM ACTION COMMITTEE." SOME OF THE DEMONSTRATORS SAID THEY WERE COMMUNISTS; OTHERS SAID THEY HAD JOINED THE PROTEST SPONTANEOUSLY.

THOSE WAVING AUSTRALIAN FLAGS IN THE COUNTER DEMONSTRATION HANDED OUT PAMPHLETS FROM THE DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY WHICH TOLD THE SPECTATORS THEY WERE WATCHING A COMMUNIST DEMONSTRATION AND SHOULD NOT BE MISSED.

EXTRA POLICE REMAINED IN THE CITY AFTER THE DEMONSTRATION FINALLY BROKE UP. THEY ALSO STOOD ON GUARD OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES CONSULATE, A BLOCK OR SO AWAY.
