  • Description

The only signs of life in Istanbul October 23 were the pigeons in front of the Yeni Cami Mosque, an ambulance rushing through the streets on an errand of mercy, and census officials taking particulars from citizens of the Turkish capital.

Every five years a national census is taken in Turkey. From 1 a.m. until the census completion is announced on the radio at night, everybody has to stay in their homes and answer the census officers' questions.

All traffic is brought to a halt, and trains, boats and aircraft cannot move until every passenger has given full personal details.

When the final results are announced, Turkey's population is expected to total more than 28 million.
