    Background: THE TRIAL OPENED IN CAIRO YESTERDAY (TUESDAY AT THE SUPREME SECURITY COURT, OF THREE WEST GERMANS ACCUSED OF SPYING FOR ISRAEL.WOLFGANG LOTZ, A HORSE BREEDER, APPEARED IN COURT WITH HIS WIFE AND A DUSSELDORF COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE, FRANK KIESOW.THE PROSECUTION HAVE ASKED FOR THE DEATH SENTENCE ON LOTZ AND HIS WIFE, AND A HARD LABOUR SENTENCE FOR KIESOW.

    ALL THREE WORE DARK GLASSES.THE TWO MEN WORE NEAT BUSINESS SUITS, WHILE FRAU LOTZ WAS DRESSED IN A GAY SUMMER DRESS.

    LOTZ PLEADED GUILTY TO SIX CHARGES LISTED AGAINST HIM IN THE INDICTMENT, BUT SAID THAT HE WAS NOT GUILTY OF THE OTHER FOUR.HIS WIFE AND KIESOW DID NOT ENTER A PLEA AT THAT STAGE.

    THE INDICTMENT ALLEGES THAT LOTZ AND HIS WIFE DIVULGED EGYPTIAN DEFENCE SECRETS TO ISRAELI AGENTS AND SENT EXPLOSIVES IN POSTAL PACKAGES FROM WEST GERMANY TO EGYPT.LOTZ IS ALSO ALLEGED TO HAVE USED EXPLOSIVES TO TRY TO KILL A WEST GERMAN EXPERT WORKING FOR EGYPT AND TO HAVE THREATENED THE LIVES OF OTHERS.KIESOW IS ACCUSED OF SENDING INFORMATION TO A WEST GERMAN STEEL FIRM.(A LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COMPANY IN QUESTION -- THE MANNESMAN EXPORT COMPANY -- ATTENDED THE HEARING.)
    THE TRIO FIRST APPEARED IN COURT ON JUNE 28TH, WHEN THE DEFENCE REQUESTED A MONTH'S ADJOURNMENT.THE TRIAL CONTINUES TODAY (WEDNESDAY).
