  • Description

In Bilbao, in the heart of the Basque region of Spain, thousands of Nationalists demonstrated on Saturday (10 June), demanding economic autonomy for the area.

SYNOPSIS: The protest, organised by the Basque Nationalist Party, was supported by many left-wing groups, including Maoists and Spanish Communists. The demonstrators, called on the government to re-establish the Basque financial agreement -- "Conciertos Economics". This policy, adopted by Republicans during the Civil War allowing the Basque region economic independence, was abolished by the late General Franco.

Over 40,000 people joined the demonstration. Many of the placards carried by the protestors were in Euscaro -- the Basque language. The demand for home rule has resulted in the setting up of a regional council. The Basque Nationalist Party recognises this as an interim measure, but is calling for full autonomy. The outlawed Basque separatist organisation, ETA, recently said it would intensify its campaign of violence unless the Spanish government granted the region full independence, withdrew all police and troops and legalised all political parties.
