    Diplomats are trying to produce a new compromise resolution on the Middle East after five days of often acrimonious debate in the United Nations General Assembly. The Assembly is now is weekend recess, and two opposition resolutions have been presented for consideration. Nineteen members of the Afro-Asian group in the Assembly have supported a resolution which asks the Assembly to recognise the 'inadmissibility of the acquisition of territories by force'.

    The Nigerian delegate to the General Assembly, Mr. Ogbu and his Tanzanian counterpart, Mr. Salim, both spoke in favour of the resolution against retaining territory acquired by force.
