Background: A million gallons of water poured over the streets around a Belfast reservoir on Friday (8 October) after saboteurs blasted the reservoir. With Northern Ireland already suffering from a water shortage caused by drought, armed men marched into the reservoir's pumping station, ordered employees out and then planted explosives at each of the main pumps and the reservoir wall. Another explosion damaged the Belfast plant of the mass-circulation London "Daily Mirror".
The latest acts of sabotage in Belfast occurred a the British army announced it is raising its Northern Ireland troop strength to its highest ever - nearly 14,000.
