  • Description

VISNEWS filmed May 15 near Birmingham during a demonstration of a radio-controlled lawn-mower which cuts the grass while the "gardener" sits in a comfortable chair, watching.

The do-it-self mower is a near-future project which will probably be on sale in 1960 at a price of about GBP60-GBP100. The machine is an adapted conventional 14 in motor-mower. The front roller and the engine have been removed, castors replacing the roller while two 12-volt batteries and an electric motor replace the petrol engine. The batteries last for five hours of mowing and can be recharged.

By operating the manuals on a small radio-transmitter the mower can be switched on and off and steered around the garden at 2mph. It cuts up to 500 square yards of lawn in half an hour but, alass, it does not automatically empty the grass-box. The "gardener" has to do this himself.
