Background: Soccer...and Argentina has beaten a visiting Bulgarian side in an international friendly soccer match at the River Plate Stadium where they won the World Cup nine months ago. The match played on Wednesday (25 April) was won by Argentina 2-1.
SYNOPSIS: A capacity crowd was at the River Plate stadium to see the Argentina side, wearing the stripped shirts and playing from left to right, meet Bulgaria. It was not long before they had the chance to see some of the form that won the home side the World Cup last year.
From the Argentina attack, a goal-mouth scramble sees No. 7 Rene Houseman get room to force his shot past the Bulgarian goal keeper.
Argentina one up after just three minutes of play. Soon after another of their attacks also developed into a chance. One of the new players, 18-year old Diego Maradona, hits the post with his shot.
But Bulgaria's Hristo Bonev dampened the World Cup fever when he scored with a brilliant free kick in the tenth minute which beat goalkeeper Fillol completely. The game from the outset was a routine affair, with some brilliant sporadic attacks by the Argentine forwards who were unable to crack the solid Bulgarian defence.
Argentina, playing with less than the team that beat Holland 3-1 in the final last June, did not put up the performance expected of them as world champions.
However one Argentine attack resulted in a foul on their striker in the penalty area.
Argentine captain Daniel Passarella sealed his team's victory with the Penalty in the fifty ninth minute.
On several occasions Maradona showed his world class with brilliant individual play which had the crowds on their feet.
However despite Argentine coach Cesar Luis Menotti's experimentation with the new young players, being groomed for the Madrid World Cup, his team won 2-1.
